Shona Rimes has been responsible for creating strong diverse characters in her work. She's broken boundaries and records with the Tv shows she is responsible for. The latest actress to get her props was Voila Davis at the 2015 Emmys the other day. She won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a drama series. But what made this moment so special was she was the first black woman of any nationality to win this.
I still can't get over the scene in How To Get Away With Murder when she comes home and strips bare in front of the mirror. By that I mean you see her sit there crying taking off her jewellery, make up, lashes and importantly her wig. It was a powerful scene as it highlighted how women from that background have to deal with their hair. I can't relate to that directly but I hated that the idea of someones natural hair not being seen as beautiful or acceptable. Really opened my eyes you could just think they wore weaves and wigs for fun and that it wasn't a deep rooted issue within the country.
Ahh sorry got a little carried away with that episode but YouTube it if you haven't watched the show. Just wanted to give you guys a little insight to How To Get Away With Murder and Voila's acting if you're not already familiar with it. Its amazing !!!
As she got up to speak Voila gave a powerful speech about diversity in her stunning white Carmen Marc Valvo dress and gave a shout out to her fellow actresses of colour for helping pave the way.
Nothing like women supporting women. Check out her beautiful dress and her even more beautiful speech below.
